CAT 5/5E F/UTP cables are twisted pair cables commonly used in computer networks and multimedia communications, including data and voice transmission. Classified by performance, CAT 5 (Class 5) supports up to 100 MHz frequency and 100 Mbps speed, widely used in Ethernet and broadband projects. CAT 5E (Enhanced Category 5) maintains the same frequency but offers superior network performance, including lower signal degradation, reduced crosstalk, improved attenuation-to-crosstalk ratio (ACR), better signal-to-noise ratio, and lower delay skew—making it suitable for high-speed applications like Gigabit Ethernet.

F/UTP refers to the cable structure: “F” stands for overall foil shielding, and “UTP” indicates that the internal twisted pairs are unshielded. The cable features an aluminum foil wrap around the bundled pairs to block external electromagnetic interference (EMI), while leaving the individual pairs unshielded to reduce cost and maintain flexibility. It does not affect crosstalk within the pairs.

The CAT 5/5E F/UTP cable structure typically includes eight insulated copper conductors twisted into four pairs, wrapped in an aluminum foil layer with a conductive drain wire for grounding. This shielding improves performance in environments with high EMI, making these cables a reliable and cost-effective solution for home networks, office wiring, and general engineering installations.
